To Homeschool
or not to
Homeschool?

written by Teys P. Tirol

"I believe it would be much better for everyone if children were given their start in education at home. No one understands a child as well as his mother, and children are so different, they need individual training and study. A teacher with a roomful of pupils cannot do this. At home, too, they are in their mother's care. She can keep them from learning immoral things from other children."
- Laura Ingalls Wilder, Little House in the Ozarks

This was the question we were faced with when our first child was born. We had heard of homeschooling from a few friends but we didn't fully understand what homeschooling was all about. It wasn't until we attended a homeschooling seminar in Arizona in 2001 that my husband and I saw the benefits of homeschooling and even if it would be a real sacrifice on our part, we decided to take the leap. After many discussions, we thought it was the best route to take because our lifestyle back then involved a lot of traveling related to my husband's work and putting our child(ren) in and out of school was not a good idea.

Of course, the thought of "teaching full-time" felt intimidating. First, the sense of inadequacy and the thought of being unqualified and ill-equipped to teach our children everything they should know at every required grade level seemed overwhelming. Second, homeschooling in the Philippines wasn't well-known back then as an alternative to formal schooling as much as it is in the US. Nevertheless, we decided to give it a try because we could start with preschool. I mean, what could go terribly wrong with teaching ABC's and 123's anyway? We could always stop when we reach statistics or quantum mechanics if push came to shove.
