ChereKaye
Digital Scrapbook Designer
Funky Playground Designs

Design Inspired by Children's Clothing

interview by Claus Dieter
and Alice Koh

The Daily Scrapper had a chance to speak to ChereKaye of Funky Playground Designs recently. Read how she got into designing, her thoughts on the current trends, why she designs and her dream for a future digital scrapbooking trend.

TheDailyScrapper:
How long have you been designing?
ChereKaye:
I have been designing since July of 2007.

TheDailyScrapper:
So your designing career is pretty young.
ChereKaye:
Very young because I have no real experiences in any kind of graphic design stuff. I have been taking classes online and found it out just experimenting because I needed something for a page that I wanted to complete and it kind of took over!

ChereKaye's work space

TheDailyScrapper:
You are saying all of a sudden you had this need to design something, so how do you go about it?
ChereKaye:
Well, I asked some of my friends who were designers. I wanted a specific button that I had in my house. I took a photo of it and I asked some of my designer friends what was the best way to go about extracting that and getting it to look like for my page. They help me kind of figure that out and then I realized how much Photoshop could do that I didn't know it could do because I was

just using it to build my pages. So I signed up for some classes and ended up learning so much about Photoshop that it turned out to be something that I love so much and designing kind of came from that.

TheDailyScrapper:
So once you get hooked on Photoshop and you understood the possibility and flexibility of the software that you really went all the way around.
ChereKaye:
Yes.

TheDailyScrapper:
Are you using any hardware tool such as a digital pen or do you use your mouse and keyboard to design?
ChereKaye:
I do use a digital pen. I have a 6" Bamboo tablet that I love. I use it for almost everything.

TheDailyScrapper:
Did you have to upgrade your hardware to use the tablet?
ChereKaye:
I had to experiment with it and took some classes. The pen was actually pretty easy for me. That was the only new equipment that I bought. It came pretty easy to me because I love to doodle and sketch anyway. That is the most fun part for me in designing.

TheDailyScrapper:
Your kits are fairly huge containing at least 10 pieces of papers and 25 elements at times. How long does it take for you to complete a full size kit?
ChereKaye:
I actually worked pretty quickly. I home school my daughter so my morning is mostly spent working with her and in the afternoon she has a quiet time and then I worked again in the evening when she is in bed. Normally I could complete a full kit in 3 or 4 days.

TheDailyScrapper:
How much time does your designing take up in a day?
ChereKaye:
I design about 3 hours in the afternoon and probably about 3 to 4 hours in the evening. So I am spending about 6 to 7 hours a day.

TheDailyScrapper:
It is coming to a full time job.
ChereKaye:
It is coming close to a full time job. I am blessed enough to be able to stay home and do that with my daughter here with me. So that works out great.

TheDailyScrapper:
Is the financial reward equal to a full time job?
ChereKaye:
I think the financial reward is equivalent to a part time job would be if I have to leave my daughter with someone. With the gas prices that we are right now, it is probably more lucrative because I don't have to go anywhere to drive to a job.

The Coffee House Friends collection is definitely the project I am most proud of.  I love the versatility of all the kits, and how they can stand alone or together, and I love that I was able to portray personalities with the designs.  I had the MOST fun with this and enjoy working with the finished product the most of anything I’ve created.
