INDEPENDENCE DAY

By Joy Kuoha

My hubby was born and raised on the island of Oahu and most of his family is still living in the islands, so we spend a lot of holidays in Hawaii. While living in Hawaii, I learned to love the culture and traditions of the islands, made up of a large variety of ethnicities, traditions, cultures and languages. Our ohana (family) is spread out over the islands of Oahu and Maui. As a decedent of the Hawaiian royalty, my husband’s family owns “hui” land on Maui and we are planning to retire there someday.

July 4th is one of the most celebrated holidays in Hawaii. Each summer, islanders and tourists alike anticipate the day’s annual festivities, which are traditionally held outdoors. Picnics, barbeques, luaus, parades, games, story telling, surfing, and ultimately a large fireworks display.

I always look forward to seeing all the wonderfully bright, colorful and creative “Aloha Shirts” and muumuus worn on each holiday. Independence day always brings out the red, white and blue apparel worn with pride.
