Blending Photo Artistically
Written by Camila
________________
Would you like to create an 'artsy' layout but don't quite know how to play with the blending mode of your graphic software? Blending a photo into your background paper could really give your layout the extra 'oomph'. I believe there are many ways to blend a picture into the background. The one I use is the easiest way for me. |
|
Here, in this tutorial, I choose a beach photo I managed to capture with my camera in Ilha Bella while on a cruise along Brazil's coast.
Instructions:
01) Pick a background paper that looks like sand. I try to get the tone of the sand on my beach photo to match the tone of the background paper. To achieve that, duplicate the beach photo. Change the top layer of the photo to "overlay" blend mode. If the result doesn't exactly match the color of the background paper, you could duplicate the background paper and give the top layer the same "overlay" blend mode. If you are happy with the result, please continue to step: 4. If not, continue to step 2.
02) Select the 2 background layers and Merge Visible. (Click image 1 to see detail)
03) Select the top layer of the photo and chose the blend mode that best match the background paper. Click to try every mode to see the result you want. Blend mode "pin light" blends the photo to the background very well but in this case, I would like my photo to be a little dramatic and so I choose the "darken" mode. (Click image 2 to see the different blend modes)

04) When you are happy with the result, use an eraser tool to soften the edges of the photo. Select a big, soft brush with opacity setting around 30 and start erasing the edges off.
05) Your photo blending effect is complete! Now you can start adding beach elements and title to complete your layout.
