Nicole Seitler
Digital Scrapbook Designer
Sugarplum Paperie

I Love Everything French

interview by Claus-Dieter
and Alice Koh

After a few reschedules cause by our computer crashing, TheDailyScrapper managed to finally fixed an appointment to call Nicole. The conversation was smooth, Nicole was so easy going, her laughters infectious. Please find below our interview with the French-loving designer.

TheDailyScrapper:
How did you get the name 'Sugarplum Paperie'?
Nicole:
When I was little, my mom called me 'Sugarplum'. And I like the French word 'Paperie'. I liked how the two words sounded together.

TheDailyScrapper:
Do you have an affinity for French words?
Nicole:
I took French classes in High School and when I graduated from college, my mom took me on a trip to Paris. I really enjoyed my time there. I love Paris and French things. Some of my kit names are even a little French too because I have an affection for that.

TheDailyScrapper:
Paperie is also a French word for papers.
Nicole:
Yes. [laugh] I love papers. I struggle with elements sometimes but papers are really what I love to make. So 'Paperie' fits me that way, too.

TheDailyScrapper:
When did you open your store?
Nicole:
On November 3rd, 2007. It was a National Digital Scrapbooking Day. I told myself, ready or not, that was a day that I should go ahead

and open the shop. I had started a blog  in July of that year. So, the blog's anniversary is coming up! But I really started giving away things in September and it all grew from there.

TheDailyScrapper:
When did you learn to use Adobe Photoshop?
Nicole:
Well, about two years ago, I discovered and fell in love with the wonderful freebies on The Shabby Princess and Two Peas in a Bucket sites. From that point, I knew I really wanted to learn how they made these beautiful things. I felt like I could do it too. I started off by using Paint Shop Pro to design blog banners. I purchased Photoshop when I raised enough money from that. I didn't start off with any knowledge of it but my husband is a web and graphic designer. He knows a lot about Photoshop and he helped me. Then there were lots of different blogs, tutorials, videos and all that together helped me.

TheDailyScrapper:
Did he help you with designing the blog and website?
Nicole:
Yes. I am very lucky to be married to a web designer! [laugh] He's done everything for me. I wouldn't be able to do any of this without him.

TheDailyScrapper:
Your blog is very up to date. Who maintains it for you?
Nicole:
I do everything on my own, except for my husband who helps me with technical things. [laugh] I do all the postings, I make the freebies and my creative team helps me make the layouts that I show on the blog.

TheDailyScrapper:
Does your environment influence your design? What inspires you?
Nicole:
I am a very visual person. Usually it's the things around me. It might be a piece of fabric or birthday card. I see different designs and what different artists have done. Or maybe I'm eating breakfast at Panera and I'm having an orange scone. It makes me think "Citrus Fruit" so I think "orange" and "lemon" and "lime" and "grapefruit" and suddenly I had the idea for a whole kit based on that theme. My brain is working all the time thinking of different ideas. Trying to get them into the computer my challenge. I'm still learning how to make Photoshop do what I want it to do. [laugh]

TheDailyScrapper:
Let's say you are in the kitchen preparing dinner and an idea struck. Do you need to get the idea down straight away?
Nicole:
I usually like to mull it over and think what I would do with it, what sort of pattern and color I would use. I also have a little design notebook I like to use.
