A Different Kind of Orchard

Interview by Claus-Dieter
Written by Alice Koh

Shauna, a co-owner of Scrap Orchard gave us a number to call her partner, Kami Leonard in California as she is on a trip across States. Read Kami's personal thoughts of her newly opened store Scrap Orchard and get a glimpse of this bubbly and friendly personality.

TheDailyScrapper:

How did you get to the name 'Scrap Orchard'?
Scrap Orchard:
My husband came up with the name. We were talking about opening up a site and were kicking around a bunch of names and he said, 'What about Scrap Orchard?' At first I was kind of, "Aahh... thanks honey but we are going to come up with our own name." [laugh] Then it grew on me! We loved it. There is such a theme with it that we were able to have 'Fresh Produce', 'Fresh Fruit', 'Mixed Fruits' Megas, so we were really able to run with it.

TheDailyScrapper:
You call your store 'Market'.
Scrap Orchard:
Yes, that ties with Scrap Orchard. We call the store the 'Market'.

TheDailyScrapper:
Does your store has a certain characteristic?
Scrap Orchard:
We haven't really grown our design team. Ultimately I would like to have designers from every style. We would have something for everyone. Shauna does more grunge and I.. oh gosh! I don't even know what my style is [laugh] The store is still growing and I am not certain which direction it is going.

TheDailyScrapper:
Who helped you setting up the

store?
Scrap Orchard:
I lucked out. My sister is a web designer. She is incredible. She built the entire site. Designed it, built it, the cart, the forum, the gallery, everything. So we really lucked out having her and her expertise helping us set the store up.

TheDailyScrapper:
How many people are involved in the operation of your store?
Scrap Orchard:
It's just the 3 of us right now. My sister, me and Shauna, from Pineapple Plantation Designs. We all have different tasks. We have an incredible team of moderators who help us out in the gallery and forum. They kind of picked up the ball and ran with it. It runs like clockwork. There's not very much that we have to do on the front end. The back end, if things are not working then we will take care of that. It kind of has a life of its own and it  just going 24/7. I love going through there and seeing what people are saying in the forum and the layouts in the gallery are awesome.

TheDailyScrapper:
What makes you having a store in the scrapping industry?
Scrap Orchard:
I have been scrapbooking for years. I paper scrapped first. That was before I had a kid, just me and my husband and 4 scrapbooks of our cat! [laugh] You know, anything that looks fine to scrap, I will scrap it. After I had my daughter, I wasn't able to paper scrap because of the space that I needed, having to bring everything out and put everything away. I stumbled upon digital scrapbooking. I downloaded a freebie and from there I digital scrapped for about a year and half. I'm a photographer and I had decided to offer Christmas cards to my clients with their packages. I wanted the cards to have a digital scrapbooking feel. Commercial use products weren't available like they are now so I had to make my own stuff. I just kind of started designing. From there, six or seven months later I decided to try to be a designer.

TheDailyScrapper:
How long did it take from the initial idea to the actual launch of the store?
Scrap Orchard:
It was like record time. I think 2 weeks! 2 really busy weeks from Ground Zero to opening day. We opened on April 1st. It was unbelievable the amount of time we put into.

TheDailyScrapper:
Did you have in mind the financial aspect of it or was it pure hobby and sharing with others?
Scrap Orchard:
You know, I would love to make a lot of money [laugh] and maybe someday we will. Right now it's like a hobby.  There is definitely a sense of accomplishment. I can't even describe the first time I saw a customer who
