________________

Have you ever seen a poster or layout with black & white photo and there are colored objects in it? This is another great way to emphasize on a particular object by maintaining the color of it while reducing the effect of its background into black & white. The effect together with some elements will make your layout looking really beautiful.

The instructions given here are for Paintshop Pro 9, but you can use any other program that has those basic functions of freehand selection, and colorization. Click images below to see enlarge. Instructions are below.

1- Choose an image you want to use and determine what section you will want to keep in colours, on a black and white background. Promote background layer.

2- With the Lasso tool set to either Point to point or Edge seeker, select the area you want to keep in colour. Zoom in for easier control and view.

3- Invert selection.

4- With the colorisation effect, set the saturation to 0 (whatever the hue is). Click image (3) to view setting.

5- Just like magic, the selected area becomes black and white.

6-And now your subject is the star of the picture!

Try this technique with a wedding photo, keep the color of the bride's flower bouquet. emphasize the huge rose you have in your garden, keep the color of your child holding his dad's hand, the possibility is endless.
