By Carina Gardner There are some moments when you know your life will be completely changed. For some families, this moment is when they realize their child has Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Usually diagnosed before the age of three, autism is a disorder that may include a lack of social interaction, difficulties with communicating, and repetitive behavior. While there is a wide spectrum of autism (from mild to very severe), all of the families and relatives who experience this in their lives have many struggles as well as joys. Ilona H., who has a son with pdd-nos (a form of autism) states, “When it’s all new, it’s often frightening, feeling unsure about yourself if you’re doing

things right with him. He needs a lot of structure, and when I got used to it, there’s a lot of joy too.” Judith, who’s grandson Zane is autistic, agrees saying, “Every tiny step with an autistic child is a great victory. I cry every time he says a new word or sings a new song I did not know he knew or learns a new task.“ Scrapbooking has been a medium that some parents and grandparents have turned to as a way to interact with their loved ones.
